I Also Make Audio...

The topic at Oh Get a Grip! this week is near-death experiences. This time, I'm not telling a true story — but I am singing. I've posted a raw recording (vocals only) of a song I wrote years ago about a car accident and a brush with death. You can check it out here.

Strength in Numbers Music Post: "No Turning Back" by Chops x Paul Kim x Dumbfoundead

"Fuck a plan B—real Gs get plan A right." — Dumbfoundead

I've been listening to this song nonstop this week. It's part of a Kickstarter project that's still a way from getting funded. I'm trying to do my part spreading the word—I would really like to see this happen.

Bonus Music Post: "Someday" by The Strokes

"I'm working so I won't have to try so hard." -- The Strokes

I'm not really sure what the line I quoted above means, I only know it moves me every time I hear it. I feel like I've been working hard lately, and trying hard at the same time -- maybe too much in both cases. Sometimes, the right song can become a companion, even when I'm not sure where I'm going.

Fighting Spirit: "New Low" by Middle Class Rut

"I did my time in a windowless box, like it or not. All I got now is today; tomorrow ain't here, and yesterday has gone dead on me anyway." -- Middle Class Rut

This isn't one of my usual "sexy music" posts, hence the mid-week appearance. I like this song's fighting spirit, and have been listening to it a lot lately.

Despite the song's title ("New Low"), I feel hope and defiance from this song. The quote I posted above feels like a punked up version of the day at a time cliche. The song's narrator has been through a lot, but he hasn't given up. The failures of the past don't matter, and he's determined to make use of the resources he does have.

When I learned a little background on the band, the song's sense of struggle took on a deeper meaning for me. These guys are far from an overnight success. They've been pounding away in pursuit of their art for well over a decade. I can't help but hear the song as an anthem to continued commitment, which I really respect.

Music (Lesbian Cops Edition): "Bad Things" by Tricky

"I wanna do bad things and then we're one again." -- Tricky

I've been fascinated by the dark, sexy sound of Tricky's music since the first time I heard it. I can imagine Marleen and Nechama in bed together with his song Bad Things playing. Enjoy!

Music (Lesbian Cops Edition): "Raised to Be Lowered" by Saul Williams

"To rise above hatred to love through seeming contradiction. To seldom take a side and learn to complement the friction. To bring about the change within that we can't live without." -- Saul Williams

When I write a story, I always start by choosing the music. For "A Prayer Before Bed," I knew I needed rage and urgency, with just a glimmer of hope. I jumped around a bit while I was writing, but Saul Williams' "Raised to Be Lowered" sums it up pretty well.

Nechama and Marleen are both walking wounded, they're both tougher than seems possible, and they're both softer than seems possible. They both want a better world that seems out of reach. They might both ask this question: "Was I raised to be lowered?"

But despite all the anger and fear and suspicion that stand between them, they manage to find redemption in each other's arms, at least for a moment.
